Horse flu vaccine rollout frustrates racing bosses

There has been a call for a national approach to help combat the crippling horse flu crisis in Australia.

Racing New South Wales boss Peter V'landys and representatives from the Queensland and Victorian racing industries met federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran yesterday.
Mr V'landys says one of the major concerns is that the vaccination program needs to be consistent across the states.

"Now we've wanted to vaccinate in the green zone and the national group won't allow us to do that, which we find ludicrous considering that Victoria has no equine influenza and is allowed to vaccinate anywhere in that state," he said.

I have two horses trapped in a red zone, being cared for by someone else. The owner of the property where my horses are located has been ringing the NSW DPI daily for updates yet was not told that there was a confirmed case of EI 1.5km away, nor were they told that all the trotting and racing horses in the area had been vaccinated. So while the racing fraternity complains that they cannot use the only available vaccinations in a green zone my horses in a red zone are not being vaccinated. Everyone in the horse industry is suffering because of EI and I am sick and tired of the racing fraternity only focusing on themselves, not only have they been given first priority with regard to vacination, in many cases their horses are the only horses being vaccinated but they have also received the vast majority of the financial assistance provided by the Government. Areas closest to the EI outbreak should be provided with the available vaccinations not racing horses in green zones.
