EI FLU INJECTIONS

Does anyone have any information on how the needle should be injected? My horses reacted to their 2nd shot which was given in the standard way (no lifting of the skin) while tthe first was given with a pinch to the side of site...with no swelling etc I would like to clear this up prior to the next one in 5 months

The injection is a standard intramuscular injection. The pinch to the side of the site is just a variation in an individual vet's technique - some (I do) pinch a little bit of skin next to where the needle is going as a counter irritant to distract the horse a bit from the needle going in. Others don't. The reaction is likely to have happened with the second shot not the first as their immune system is "primed" by the first. Reactions show that your horse is having a good immune response so although they are a pain in the ass (neck!) thay are actually a reassuring sign. Just because they reacted to this one, it doesn't mean they will react to the 3rd in 5 months - different timing, different response.
