A free weekend of Thoroughbred race meetings

Please find attached a letter from Stephen Allanson (Chief Executive Officer of Racing Victoria Limited) inviting your membership base to participate in a free weekend of thoroughbred race meetings on 24 & 25 November as a measure of the racing industry’s appreciation for the contribution your members have made to help keep Victoria equine influenza free.

As you’ll see, the invitation directs your members to call RVL’s Customer Call Centre on 1300 139 401 by 4.00pm Tuesday 20 November if they wish to take up the offer of free entry and a complimentary refreshment voucher. ***Click to enlarge the letter***

If I could be any more outraged than I am, then consider me ‘horn swaggled’! Free racing indeed? At 2 country venues – how generous of the RVL. I quite frankly find the letter patronising, essentially egotistical nonsense which borders on propaganda. It is also insensitive.

The TB racing industry wishes to thank who ……… the thousands of horse owners, families and businesses who are out of business and out of pocket whilst they continued to race? They wish to thank us for what? Not going to a pony club rally or an ag show? Or are they thanking the thousands of hard working families and horse owning townsfolk who work and live in areas affected by the restrictions, the loss of income and the one chance for their ailing towns to attract visitors annually?

I personally do not wish to take part in any country race meeting, free or otherwise to bolster the income of an industry that rode roughshod over their horse owning counterparts without a backward glance. Because they treated us like we did not matter, and treated us with contempt. At least the writer of that pathetic attempt at an olive branch had the grace to admit that we, the recreational horse owner or whatever we get labelled, called a halt to everything in order to safeguard the Spring Racing Carnival.

Well not with any good grace, and notwithstanding the almost laughable attempts at biosecurity witnessed on the television screens around the world, around the winning race horses and their connections, can I concede that the carnival lasted the distance, and the world did not stop when the final capering filly was led out of the public enclosure.

I would simply ask that Racing Victoria refrain from insulting our intelligence.

Dear Sir/Madam,
the invitation to EFA members (mostly pleasure horse owners and riders) to come to one of your race meetings has been taken by many of my friends and myself as a very cruel joke.
So many of us have given your rejects homes and the life they deserve, while you continue to drive in the $$ on the backs of immature horses and override literally anything in your path.
And now you invite us to see what you can do - thanks to us? (And no - we did not volunteer to any standstill for YOU. We did and continue to do it for our HORSES. Just as you should have.)

So this gesture of "goodwill" feels like a kick in the teeth.

In disbelief.
