Mt Gambier horse flu alert

THE threat of equine influenza reaching South Australia heightened today after a breach of bio-security measures at the Mount Gambier racetrack.

More than 40 horses will be quarantined in their stables overnight while swab samples are analysed from a horse which crossed the Victorian border without a legitimate travel permit.

Trained at Warrnambool by former jockey Allan Peterson, Irish Gun - which has already received a primary vaccination against the EI virus - was a late scratching from race two when the discrepancy was discovered.

Horse and trainer are already travelling back into Victoria under the order of the SA Department Of Primary Industries.

This is exactly the sort of problem that will be faced at Werribee Park. The horses coming in are meant to be "clean" but you can guarantee someone will try to duck the red tape, and cause a lockdown of every horse while its status is determined. How can a 100 metre exclusion zone be of any use? The horses who are allowed in to compete don't have an invisible shield around them, and I don't think a bit of orange bunting is going to stop the virus that has behaved quite differently to what the "experts" assumed.
It should never have been allowed to happen at Werribee Park. Why can't the Melb showgrounds site be used? Is it because it is too close to Flemington? The underhanded arrogance of some will jeapordise the health of Victorian horses, who have remained safe until now.
Shame on you EFA Vic for agreeing to this mad farce.

Well said Leanne.

But sadly I believe this will fall on deaf ears.

Sadly the imortal "Orange Bunting" cannot keep EI from spreading, it will actually have to be something better than that. Maybe they need to swith the color of the bunting???
