Vic breeders disgusted: Mudgway

Saturday, 24 November 2007

MELBOURNE - Victorian-based breeder Gary Mudgway has slammed moves by NSW breeders to have their yearlings transported to the EI-free state for the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale in March.

"They say there is ‘little or no risk'," Mudgway said in a statement.
"I say if the borders remain closed there is even less risk.
"Why should we support bringing in horses from outside the state, they have their own sales in NSW and Qld -- ask yourself what would they would do if the tables were turned?"
"Is this whole campaign to bring these horses in motivated and driven by interests in NSW?"
Mudgway said it was believed an announcement would be made on Tuesday allowing horses that had been infected with EI to enter Victoria.
He said local breeders had been urged by the Victorian Thoroughbred Breeders Association to contact the DPI voicing their disgust at a DPI decision to risk a possible Lock Down if the disease entered Victoria.
"How can anyone be comfortable with these horses entering the state with what we know at present -- if this disease is found anywhere in Victoria we will all be locked down," Mudgway fumed.
"It is becoming clear that what happened at Eastern Creek could very well be repeated in the entire state of Victoria -- who is going to compensate us then?"
Mudgway questioned whether purchasers would be keen to buy yearlings recently infected with EI.
"[The DPI] should also seek the advice of the long-suffering owners of pleasure horses, who are unlikely to sit still while the DPI risks bringing the disease into Victoria and consequently shuts down their entire summer season," he said.

I can't understand why Inglis would want to bring NSW horses to the sale, thay have their own complex at Randwick and March is when the Easter sales would be on anyway.....go figure.
Don't look for a common sense answer from the DPI or other government body here, because common sense "left the building" months ago.
As for the DPI asking the pleasure horse industry anything, pffft forget that. As far as they're concerned....WE DON'T EXSIST.
If your a racehorse in NSW you can MOVE FROM PURPLE TO AMBER no problem, just slip the DPI some incentive and your on your way. For anybody else, forget it... your there for the long haul. While there is a public investigation into how EI got here in the first place, there needs to be a seperate enquiry into the dishonest way the DPI has been operating here in NSW. Good luck with keeping the NSW yearlings out.

A horse is a horse of course of course -to quote a famous one!! - a million dollar race horse is just as open to infection and spread as a hundre dollar shetland pony. One rule for all horses in Australia - simple - if it is anything other than that it is biased, discriminatory and I would say corrupt.... if I cannot move my immunised horses to other zones or green zones for shows then no other horse should be moved for racing - regardless of its value, owner, or other disciplines either - friends with horses that contracted the flu on 20 Oct have relapsed this week in Tamworth - is it going to take a horse dropping dead on the track for them to wake up!! - if anyone thinks otherwise then they have money on their minds - not the health of the horse population of Australia - and that should come first....the fact they are allowing thousands of people onto tracks in purple zones this weekend troubles me - have the grounds been disinfected - will the carparks be disinfected - the rails people lean on - if that person travels their car down my street with EI on it and infect my unimmunised mares and foals in an amber zone who pays!! unless you can guarantee me that won't happen then I disapprove....they aren't thinking in the best interests of all horse owners... - thats my view and I'll stick to it - I have from day one ...who says the race horses are more important - just shows how callous and money hungry the owners and govt. is... it disgusts me...
