As rodeos buck the system, MP kicks out

A STATE MP has called for rodeos to be outlawed, comparing them with banned blood sports such as bear baiting and cockfighting.

Greens MP Sue Pennicuik denounced rodeos as "a cruel spectator sport" in which bulls, horses and sometimes other animals were provoked into bucking by use of spurs, electric prods and flank straps.

"Rodeo animals may suffer many kinds of injuries and are sometimes killed or so badly injured that they have to be destroyed," Ms Pennicuik told Parliament.

About 1000 rodeos a year are held throughout Australia, with about 40 in Victoria.

These people should not say things about a sport that they know nothing about. The rodeo associations in australia all follow strict animal welfare guidelines that have been put in place. These people (who constantly criticise the rodeo community) never poke comments at the racing industry, where the death and injury rate FAR outweighs the rates in rodeos, which as explained by Russell Green are VERY minimal. How many people do you hear complain about the race horses being constantly whipped down the straight to the finish, and the steeple chasing horses breaking their necks, legs etc during a race. And the poor horse that has cost $$$$$ to buy, that just does not make the grade to race...... Some if they are lucky enough go to the recreational horse owner to another career, others not so lucky get their heads cut off. There are also race horse trainers that use electric spurs to try and get horses to run......Just like a race horse will not run if it does not want to, you cannot make a bronc or a bull buck if it does not want to.
