It is realised that there is not much notice but we only prolong the risk of infection if vaccinations are left to until after the holidays.
Horses are not allowed from recent IP's (properties that have had EI for 14 days or less)
Some surveillance testing may be carried out at these "drive thru" clinics

RECOVERED HORSES:
It is realised that there is not much notice but we only prolong the risk of infection if vaccinations are left to until after the holidays.
Surveillance testing will incorporate both sorts of tests - serology (blood), and PCR (nasal swabs) - the necessary test for proof of immunity is the serology test, this test also distinguishes naturally infected horses from vaccinated ones.

DPI would rather vaccinate the horse - if there is any doubt as to its status (recovered or "clean") - than not!

Provided it is disclosed on the day that the horse is a recovered horse, the DPI will carry out Serology Testing on these horses at their cost under the surveillance testing program. However if it is later found this fact was not disclosed by the owner, knowing that it was a recovered horse, the cost of this serology testing will be laid back against the owner.

NSW EFA

Green and Amber Zone Vaccinations

The EFA NSW has provided a list of our members who own EFA registered horses with current performance cards in the green and amber zones as they existed November 2007. The Chief Veterinary Officer of the NSW DPI, Dr Bruce Christie, has given permission for these horses to be vaccinated and microchipped at the owner's expense if the owners are planning to compete these horses in the purple zone in the first half of 2008.
If you wish to have your EFA competition horses vaccinated please refer to the application form here and submit to the EFA NSW office. We will only accept forms submitted via fax or post, please see form for address and/or fax number details. Other horses on your property without current perfomance cards may not be vaccinated at this time. Event protocols involving horses coming to and from events in the purple zone are still being discussed with DPI and the CCEAD, we will advise you as soon as these protocols have been finalised. Thank you for your patience yet again.

Equine Influenza – United Kingdom

Equine Influenza – United Kingdom
1st December 2007

In the past 10 days there have been 7 samples submitted to the Animal Health Trust that have proven positive for EIV by NP ELISA. The samples have been submitted from 3 main locations in the UK: Berkshire, Lincolnshire and Cheshire. So far there has been no link found between the outbreaks at these three locations.

Virus isolation, antigenic and genetic characterisation is currently underway at the AHT.

Equine influenza: China

Equine influenza has been reported in the Xinjiang province of China. A total of 5500 cases have been identified and it is estimated that there are 130,000 susceptible animals in the area. Screening of horses for disease is occurring and affected animals have been quarantines to try to restrict the spread of disease. The first case was diagnosed on October 30th. No further information is available at this time, but this report will be updated when new information becomes available
